WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES

Ladybrook Primary School

One day in July ten Toshiba laptops arrived in my school. This addition to our ICT infrastructure has been nothing short of a revelation.

We are a small primary school and we are fortunate enough to have an ICT suite of ten networked computers.  We have already experienced the accelerated learning, which takes place when children can work together using ICT as a tool for their learning.

We wanted to extend the idea of group learning into the classrooms.  The laptops have enabled us to achieve this goal.  We can timetable the use of the laptops for classes.  This means that you could, for instance, go into a Year 6 class and see 8 – 10 laptops integrated into normal classroom use.  The next day you may see some laptops in an infant class.  In this way the laptops become a simple but mobile resource to use wherever the need may be.  The quality of the TFT screens is brilliant and this greatly helps classroom use.  The laptops are robust and simple to use – even I have mastered them.

An exciting ‘spin-off’ is that we have allocated specific laptops to specific teachers for their home use.  Teachers can now practice their own ICT skills at home.  They can prepare resources and familiarise themselves with new software.  This facility has helped to develop staff confidence and expertise.  Teachers are beginning to use the laptops for their half termly and weekly planning and we believe that this will eventually help us all to save time.

The Toshiba laptops are truly multi-purpose and as such represent excellent value for money.  As an investment for a school the returns are enormous.  We have only had the laptops in use since September.  They have already impacted upon my school in a really positive way.  I would not want to be without them.

I firmly believe that the laptops will help us to improve standards within my school.  They are having a profound effect upon us all (children and staff alike) – and to coin a phrase ….. ‘We have only just begun’.  Watch this space.
