The Project of Interactive Whiteboard

Experiment Conducted by Beijing No.50 Secondary School

Abstract:

Background

As a full-time comprehensive school, Beijing No.50 Secondary School was founded in 1953 and granted Key Secondary School by Chong Wen District Government in 1978. At present, the school consists 53 classes with 2560 students, including 1060 juniors aged from 13-15 and 1500 seniors aged from 16-18. There are 152 teachers.

Now the application of computer in the education of every subject has become prevalent in our school. The teachers carry out educational activities through nets, such as making preparations together within the campus before giving classes, making a living educational report of the network class, answering the students’ questions and assessing their exercises. At the same time, they also make teaching programs on the computer to strengthen the substantial results of teaching and improve the efficiency. By these means, they have achieved great fruits.

As to the advance technology of Interactive Whiteboard, we think it is a more functional teaching tool. So we decide to conduct the experiment of it in Class3, Class 9 and Class 10, Grade 11 . There are 513 students in this grade, and 152 students take part in the experimental project, nearly covering 30% of the total number.

Object

 

1 To explore how to apply the Interactive Whiteboard in the formation of good environment as to inspire the student to study English;

2 To explore how to apply the Interactive Whiteboard to bring about a lifelike auditory and visual effect with the purpose to help the students overcome all obstacles of language expression, listening, reading and writing, actually improve the practical results of students’ studies;

3 To explore how to apply the technology of Interactive Whiteboard to better the educational contents and make the focal and difficult points stand out; 

4 To compare the performance gap in study caused by the application of the Interactive Whiteboard in the same class;

5 To compare the performance gap in study between the classes those apply the Interactive Whiteboard and the classes those don’t apply that tool during the same study period;

6 To teach other teachers try to use the technology of the Interactive Whiteboard.

3Teaching Contents

 

All contents in the English textbook are for Grade 11, including the all-round language ability training of listening, speaking, reading and writing for the students.

 

4 Data collection

 

1 Questionnaire

a) The investigation of students’ basic information: how many students posses computers; how much the students use the computers (doing exercises, downloading files, chatting online and making programs).

b) The investigation on the subject inclination in the same class after the application of the Interactive Whiteboard;

c) The investigation on the subject inclination between the classes used the Interactive Whiteboard and the classes haven’t that.

 

2 Knowledge measurements

a) The investigation on the knowledge acquirement in the same class after the application of the Interactive Whiteboard;

b) The investigation on the knowledge acquirement between the classes used the Interactive Whiteboard and the classes haven’t that.

 

3 Daily record of data

a) How many times it will be used

4 Workshop

Collect students’ feedback suggestions for the application of the Interactive Whiteboard through the channels of daily communication and special discussion.

 

5 Experimental process

 

1 All English classes of experimental classes should hold in the special classroom of Interactive Whiteboard;

2 In the class, the teacher should apply the Whiteboard and gradually teach the students use the Whiteboard;

3 The teacher should make special preparation for the class applying the Interactive Whiteboard, and take the rich resources provided by the Whiteboard to create the teaching program to help students enhance their abilities of English listening, speaking, reading and writing.

 

6 Achievements of stages

 

The first stage of this experiment will start in March 2005 and make a summary of this stage in June. During this time, we will make a writing summary of the part carried out, and pool the experimental data, live record of classroom teaching, students’ notes and mutual appraisements of teacher and students. After completing the analysis, then we will present them to the Planning Group.

1 To share the experimental achievements with schools participating the experiment through the website “Miranda” and International Conference;

 

    2 To share the experimental achievements with our teachers through our school’s website and internal study group.
