Outline Proposal by Liu Yan

Liuyan Liuyan

Year of posting: 2005

Abstract:

Currently whilst I am studying at Southampton University I will be in contact with SuYi with whom I work. He will be communicating the progress of the project on a regular basis to both the UK adviser and myself, so that I too can be involved at the early stages and use the information to feed into my research and suggest possible ideas for him to try out based on my observations and studies in the UK. On my return to China I shall develop a series of lessons to develop and improve Written English as part of Stage 2 of the project with the following as my key focus

1)      Using the Miranda Net World E-citizens concept to create and develop some cultural communication projects: to see whether it can improve students writing ability and critical thinking ability and how it can transform learning context.

Part of this will be linked to the projects in the other schools, examining and developing the themes that they wish to use and creating materials for them, including the “Chinese” perspective where appropriate.

For the Chinese school in Beijing this may result in dual language work and the students will build on their previous ICT skills in developing web sites in both Chinese and English.

2) My other line of interest is with on-line interaction – the use of email and possibly video conferencing.

It is expected that during the SA visit to Cape Town there will be time for meetings and discussion with our UK contact Adviser, Mr David Jordan, which will allow for the development and refinement of our future lesson plans: with additional work being done over the Summer prior to his visit near the start of the new term in September.

As part of the pre-planning process I shall be meeting with Mr David Jordan during the Easter holiday to look at progress so far and to discuss my ideas in more detail – by the end of July/August it is hoped that there will be a more detailed overview of the work to carried out in the second phase of the project.

By the end of June I hope to have examined the results of the first stage and be able to make some recommendations for the second stage.
