This study into supply teaching in special schools came about through my personal initiation into a new field of work - the challenge and discovery of a different way of being a teacher, and the issues emerging from that experience. These are voiced and examined from the perspectives of supply teachers themselves, the schools and support staff, the service providers and also from participatory observations recorded in my own diary. Much of the data is conversational and gives an illustrative picture of the complexity of situations encountered in the special school classroom. The study is set in a context of systemic change and underpinned with background research into curriculum and policy reforms.
The research highlights specific areas for discussion and training need such as behaviour management, medical issues, health and safety, curriculum development, communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills. It also presents another dimension to the existing concerns of supply teachers in mainstream education, also on the margins of provision and continuing professional development. With the implementation of inclusion policies, the findings may be of wider interest to those structuring a more substantive and supportive approach to preparation, training and accessing of information.
