The lessons of NOF are helping to shape new formats for ICT CPD. One such approach is that taken by a project in a group of East London schools supported by the Institute of Education. Called 'Web Wise Wapping' the project takes a community approach to developing teachers' ICT skills. Project schools each get two laptops for the project leaders and 7 'Tools for Schools' laptops.Sponsorship arrangements with 8 partners provide additional resources.

The focus for each school's ICT work varies, but each includes an element of working with parents or some kind of community activity. One school has developed a communication project and has set up an E-pals link with a New York elementary school. Another is developing a multimedia school newspaper. A web site forms a focus for schools projects and will act as a showcase over time for what the schools achieve.

The characteristics of this initiative are :

Christina Preston, the brains behind the project hopes that this new format for CPD in ICT will succeed 'because the training has a purpose - the school can develop its ICT work with a few extra resources and face-to-face support at headteacher and teacher levels. Teachers can personally get value from the scheme through certification and learning credits. Importantly, the project gets schools in the area working together and with parents in sharing their expertise - and this sense of community learning is promoted through a project web site."
