A MirandaMod at the Handheld Learning Conference
11:00 - 13:00
5th October 2009
The Brewery, Chiswell Street, Barbican, London EC1
A MirandaMod is an informal, loosely structured unconference (see Wikipedia definition) of like-minded educators to share ideas about the use of technology to inspire others. As a participant in the Handheld Learning MirandaMod at the Handheld Learning Conference you can stay for the whole session or just ‘drop in’ to raise issues and discuss theory and practice about the use of ubiquitous technologies in informal learning, and the ways in which they can impact formal education.
- Visit the Handheld Learning Conference web site
- Sign up to the MirandaMod collaborative online line map about handheld learning
- Register for the FREE Monday at the Handheld Learning Conference, including the MirandaMod
Participants in this MirandaMod are invited to raise issues and discuss theory and practice about the use of ubiquitous handheld technologies in informal learning, and the ways in which they can impact formal education. Dr John Cuthell will chair the sessions that address these questions:
- Can these technologies make learning for professionals, teachers and students more personal and relevant?
- How can we re-conceptualise assessment, so that it better reflects the ways in which knowledge is developed collaboratively? Or should we give up on the nostrum of online learning?
- What is the value of the learning experience balanced again the expense and the risk?
Participants at the conference can drop into this session face to face on the first day, which is free to attend, and/or engage online for the full three days of the conference when participants are invited to contribute to an online concept map that will represent the collaborative knowledge built up by delegates at the Handheld Learning conference, as well as their colleagues who have participated online.
If you'd like to discuss your contribution, or if you'd like more information, please email .
Sharing and collaborating on the map
All participants are invited to contribute to an online concept map that will represent the collaborative knowledge built up by delegates at the Handheld Learning conference, as well as their colleagues who have participated online. This open, wiki-type map that everyone may view and edit can be found on:
Participants can view the progress of, and build, the concept map throughout the session and during the rest of the conference. Others can contribute to the map.

The Handheld Learning Conference brings together more than 1,500 international delegates from the education, entertainment and electronics world to explore new ways of transforming learning. This year's headline speaker is Malcolm McLaren with many more exciting and inspiring speakers to be announced with a series of major talks, breakout sessions, networking events and an awards party.
September Message from Graham Brown Martin who organises the HandHeld Learning conference
Dear Colleagues
With three weeks to go before the annual Handheld Learning Conference (http://www.handheldlearning2009.com) I thought I would bring you this update.
The conference programme has recently been revised and we think that you'll find that it presents one of the most powerful and provocative speaker line-up's to have ever been assembled for the learning, teaching and training sectors.
Whether your interest is for learning in the Primary, Secondary, Higher Education, Business or Military arena's you will not be disappointed and will find examples of important, leading edge practice demonstrating improved learning using mobile technologies plus the opportunity to mix and network with a cross-section of thought leaders and practitioners from other sectors.
Please review the latest programme at: http://bit.ly/oGTc1
The first day of the conference is the free to attend Handheld Learning Festival that features unconference meetings, fringe groups, presentations by young learners, best practice and industry showcases and ends with an evening international awards party for innovation in learning, teaching and training using mobile technologies.
Day two is the beginning of the main conference for registered delegates opening with 4 reflections on learning from
- Zenna Atkins, Chairman of Ofsted
- Malcolm McLaren, Artist
- Yvonne Roberts, Senior Associate, Young Foundation
- James Paul Gee, Presidential Professor of Literacy Studies, ASU
In the afternoon there are sessions on creativity and innovation (with examples from the education, entertainment and military sectors), games for learning and social media for learning.
The evening features a social networking session over drinks.
Day three features a main morning session on inclusion covering work using mobile phones in emerging nations to home access in less affluent homes using netbooks followed by an afternoon main session on transformation that presents three examples; bridging the digital divide in South Africa using cell phones, transforming the workforce within a major US corporation, integrating mobile technology into one of the leading US universities.
Other optional sessions during the day including an extensive International Research Strand, a UK Policy Strand (supported by TDA, SSAT, LSN and PfS), Spotlight Scotland (supported by Learning & Teaching Scotland - boycotting optional) and a session on emerging technologies and new practices.
If this wasn't enough the conference ends with a look to the future with a 45 minute closing keynote presentation from inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil (http://bit.ly/eHwzg)
More than 1,500 delegates will attend this event over the 3 days.
The last places for the conference are now available and we recommend that you book now to avoid disappointment as we always end up having to reluctantly turn people away in the last weeks before the conference as the venue has a restricted capacity. There are no registration facilities at the venue.
You can register at http://bit.ly/18mx1H
Please be a part of the future, come and join us and your colleagues at this years conference!
Very best wishes
Graham Brown Martin
