Pedagogies for interactive technologies: whiteboards and visualisers

Background

As interactive technologies are becoming commonplace in many classrooms and as an emerging body of literature engages with their effective use for teaching and learning, the WLE Centre for Excellence, in conjunction with Mirandanet and Steljes, is organizing a two-day seminar to take stock of existing research findings as well as to chart leading- edge practice with a view to identifying key issues arising in relation to three areas:

The event will bring together policymakers as well as researchers and practitioners at various stages of their careers and with various degrees of familiarity with interactive technologies.

The research day will provide an overview of existing literature and explore appropriate research methods and introduce the findings of large- as well as small-scale studies such as the recently published evaluation of the London Challenge (www.dfes.gov.uk/research/data/uploadfiles/RR 816.pdf) and aWLE Centre project exploring the relationship of objects, visualisers and pupils learning (www.wlecentre.ac.uk/cms/files/projectsheets 06-7/PS_DianeMavers_06- 07.pdf).

The practitioner day will feature presentations from leading-edge practitioners from all phases and various subject domains as well as insights into pedagogical practices arising from research with a focus on the following strands:

Leading-edge practitioner presentations will initiate debate within each of the strands with a view to identifying key issues and there will also be opportunities to share classroom practice.

February 7th (research- orientation) and 8th (practice-orientation), 2008.

Sessions will start at 0930 and last until 1600 hours on both days.

Speakers

Speakers will include Gemma Moss and Carey Jewitt (Institute of Education, London), Bridget Somekh (Manchester Metropolitan University), Steve Higgins (Durham University), Diane Mavers (Institute of Education, London), Dylan William (Institute of Education, London) and a selection of leading-edge practitioners.

Registration for this event is free. The themes and sessions of both days are interrelated and build on each other .

Please state clearly which day(s) you are able to attend. Places are limited and preference will be given to applicants able to attend both days. Please also indicate your first and second choice for the practitioner strand on the second day.

Outcomes

The WLE Centre will document the event in an appropriate form, e.g. through a seminar website as well as more formal publications where possible and appropriate.
