Papers by Lawrence Williams
Lawrence Williams, one of our senior Fellows, sums up an important aspect of his work:
Strewn across the international pages on MirandaNet, and through various ICT text books, magazine and newspaper articles, as well as TV programmes in the UK, Japan, Korea and Macedonia, is the strongly-held belief that ICT tools can be used to bring the children of the world together in peaceful understanding.
The starting point for this work was our link with Japan, through which
we were able explore the two very contrasting cultures of the two countries.
Topics included the role of
Women
in Society,
International
drama lessons, and a
UNICEF
charity concert where money was raised in two different countries,
but for the same event!
An early success was “Kabuki Gift”, a play performed simultaneously in Osaka and London, by video-conference. Blue Peter’s Konnie Huq was pleased to be taught how to write the symbol for Peace, in Japanese calligraphy, by a young student in Osaka.
Next, we began a link with American students and NASA scientists, as part of the Science Through Arts Project. (See the picture sequence)
Following Federal budget cuts, this project moved to Taiwan, where, once again, we were able to share ideas about our differences, while exploring science and culture together.
We have worked with students and their teachers in China and South Africa, Poland, Macedonia and Thailand. And we have published these ideas on-line on MirandaNet, in the Czech Republic and in Beijing.
Next in line is a link with schools and teacher training colleges in South Korea.
We have shared this method wherever there are like-minded teachers, willing to explore a vision of a world where the children are brought together in peaceful harmony and understanding.
