We are all aware of the critical moment at which we stand in world history. Tensions are high in many places around the world. Not since the heyday of the Cold War has there been such an environment. From the Korean peninsula in East Asia to the Middle East, Global terrorism and the threat of war is on high alert.
Furthermore, since we live in an era of globalization of economies, information, transportation, communications and media, the flashpoints are not isolated problems. What affects some, affects us all. There is no place on earth where we can avoid the consequences of cultural conflict.
Unfortunately, conflict is interpreted for us by the dominant world media, further re-inforcing western media hegemony. Bangladesh has long been at the receiving end of the western media's pervasive concentration on floods, corruption, poverty and political agitation. They are hardly interested in tradition, rituals, lifestyle, moral dignity and cultural values.
In this context, Drik (www.drik.net) and Zeezeiln (www.zzln.nl) seized the digital opportunity and conceived a "Power of Culture" initiative.
As a first step, a workshop on " Internet, Photography and Context" was organised with the students of Pathshala, the South Asian institute of Photography, Bangladesh, (www.pathshala.net), from 6 - 7th August 2002. After the workshop the Bangladesh website was launched on September 1, 2002. All photos were taken by the students who are promising photojournalists and media activists. The whole presentation focused on the cultural heritage and traditions of Bangladesh.
