2006 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop
30th July - August 5th

Cultural Activities

UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop - StudentsVisitors to the site may not be aware that among the many scientific activities undertaken by the students, they were asked to engage in this strange and rather mad random dispersal activity on the University Steps. Its purpose is not exactly clear, but no doubt it was designed to simulate Brownian Motion on a Grand Scale, and the sharp-eyed (click on the picture for an enlarged view) may be able to spot Schrödinger's Cat hiding in the middle of the crowd. And then again, they might not.

One wonders if Health & Safety were aware of this strange game?

The truth is actually much simpler: tired of all that fun in the labs and lecture theatres, they were rushing to partake in the more serious side of the Workshop - the ominously named Cultural Events. On reflection, these turned out to involve just as much scientific investigation and experimentation as the rest of the week.

Here is a small selection

1) The Ritual Slaughter of extinct species (tongue in cheek portrayal of the saints of Britain written and performed by students from Colchester High School for Girls, with some assistance from their teacher)
