2006 UK-JAPAN YOUNG SCIENTIST WORKSHOP
at the UNIVERSITY OF SURREY
30 July - 5 August 2006
• UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop is for post-16 students from schools in Britain and Japan... students will live and work together in small international teams on real-life science related project s... will be guided by university specialist s... will develop their own thinking and questioning.. and at the end of the week the teams will present the outcomes of their work. In all this, they will develop an international understanding of each others’ ways of thinking and doing things, and in many cases form lasting friendships.
• Projects are being planned with top specialists in sleep-clock gene research, global environmental monitoring by satellite, nanotechnology, the health/ethical consequences of global warming, and the challenge of water treatment in emergency situations in developing countries.
• Applications are invited from schools for the remaining places at the workshop. The organisers are looking for teams of 5/6 students from a given school, accompanied by a teacher who will have pastoral responsibility for the students from that school and at the same time benefit from the experience of interacting with Japanese teachers and students and the university environment.
• The 2006 Workshop builds on the success of the 2004 UK-Japan Workshop held at the Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto (the photographs were taken there) which was the subject of two television programmes on the Japanese Science Channel.
The Workshop is offered FREE OF CHARGE to selected students and their teachers. Participants arrive afternoon Sunday 30th July and depart the following Saturday morning.
Interested schools should contact Dr Eric Albone, Clifton Scientific Trust
