To compare the geography in different countries
Aim | Pupil Age | Curriculum | Activity | Plenary
"It gives us a chance to learn from them (our European partnership
schools) and us to give them information."
Pupil age 10, UK
Aim: To compare the geography in different countries
Pupil age: 9 to 11 years / small group activity
Curriculum: Geography, Science
Activity: Take a geography topic, for example Mountains, Rivers or Tourism. Pupils write a short report on the topic: e.g. the largest mountain, the longest or local river, the nearest tourist attraction to the pupils' local area.
Pupils send this to a contact in another country, then ask them to send similar information about their country. If possible, maintain an email dialogue, with the pupils asking questions to each other about the topic.
Plenary: Pupils find the contributing partner countries on the map. Pupils compare the different geography using the information gathered by the pupils.
Pupils compare the information they are gathering for their geography topic with similar information collected across a variety of countries. This helps increase understanding of geographical facts and empathy if natural disasters happen and there is a refugee emergency.
